Driving past Knabb's Ridge today I snapped a few more pictures of my new favorite place.
They seem to be getting these turbines up pretty fast...hopefully it will fully running when Alisha, Karen and Kema
get here at the end of the month.
For my US friends.... here's a little background on what this night means. Of course, taken from Wiki, since I had to find this stuff out too!
Guy Fawkes Night (more commonly known as Bonfire Night) is an annual celebration on the evening of the 5th of November. It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of the 5th of November 1605 in which a number of Roman Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Palace of Westminster.
In the United Kingdom, celebrations take place in towns and villages across the country in the form of both private and civic events. They involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires on which "guys" are burnt. These "guys" are traditionally effigies of Guy Fawkes, the most famous of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators, or (very much less commonly in the present day) the Pope.[1] Before the fifth, children traditionally use the "guys" request a "penny for the guy" in order to raise funds with which to buy fireworks.
In the United Kingdom, there are several foods that are traditionally consumed on Guy Fawkes Night:
- black treacle goods such as bonfire toffee[citation needed] and parkin,[2]
- toffee apples,[citation needed] and
- baked potatoes, which are wrapped in foil and cooked in the bonfire or its embers
Okay, so basically, there's a fire, you toss a 'guy' on it... you drink like mad, eat like mad and shoot off fireworks.
Damn, sounds almost like our July 4th doesn't it? So for our first Guy Fawkes Night, we went to Julie and Ash's...they do it every year on our block. Most of the neighbors came down and some of their friends so, it was a nice night. I took a crapload of pictures of the fire, ate a little bit, had a couple beers and went home about 10.
We brought S'mores. I mean, what else were the Yanks going to bring to a bonfire? Apparently, the Brits have no clue about the S'mores. Well, they are hooked now.
Notice that TNT that was put up there by Jack's friend Daniel.
Our Guy is getting pretty hot now...as Millie watches on.
Kenna, Miranda and Millie
Kenna with her sparkler. Mind you, she's all worried about her safety-- so she those awesome safety glasses on and a HUGE glove.
Lucy and Ashley
And the fireworks begin.
And..last but totally not least...
My favorite of the night... my sparkler.
For some reason, as out of place as it seems, the Knabbs Ridge Wind
Farm really strikes me as beautiful. Repower UK is building turbines
that will use the wind, which gets pretty strong up here, to create
power for the UK. I wish the US would do more things like this. The UK
has additional Wind Farms off the coast also.
There was some flack
for this a few years ago, a lot of people didn't want the farm built
here since this is gorgeous rolling hills, lots of sheep and pretty
unspoiled countryside.
I'm not sure how many turbines they are actually building, but there is one up and one almost up. I'll be sure to keep the pictures coming.
I wonder what she'll do for her next trick??
So, this is what it looks like at the ER..in the waiting room. Not too pretty but not too bad. Just really swollen and little bruised. She has a cankle. It's official.
It's like one chicken leg.... and one turkey leg.
While slightly off topic, this stained glass was in front of the Radiology waiting room...
We make it home with no cast, nothing broken...just a really bad sprain.. She's got some crutches and an ace bandage so she'll be fine. We get her home, lay her down in the living room on the couch and just let her rest with that foot elevated all day. No school for her on Monday, since she can't put weight on it yet.
On Tuesday, she hobbled her way to school....and her ankle looked worse... but better. It looked as if it were healing up some. It felt better she said, but by the end of the school day it started to get really sore and stiff.
This was today...after school. WTF? It looks as if there is a dead ankle sewn on her leg, doesn't it? Just ...eww.
But same thing, it was sore and stiff after walking on it all day. Gimpy Clutzerton really needs to be careful.
Perhaps tomorrow after school it will be a technicolor masterpiece. Ya think?
I love these things. I don't know why... but I find it funny that people actually protest our being here. They think that we are totally eavesdropping on them.. like we can what the Brits are really doing... or how the Brit teenagers are talking about the multiple teenage pregnancies. I mean, who really cares? We don't care about what the Brits are saying.... really we don't... And Lindis Percy...lord she's a piece of work. She's out in front of the base every Tuesday night ..most of the time by herself and she's been doing it for years. But, hey you gotta love her determination, right?
Anywho.... this one, was on the 13th of Oct, and they called it "Drum Them Out".
IndyMedia Article
There's more pictures in my Flickr of course.....
What's the best music documentary or concert film you've seen?
That is way too hard.
The Who- The Kids Are Alright
Depeche Mode - 101
Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club
The Decline of Western Civilization
Scott Walker - 30 Century Man
Man, I could go on....I LOVE the documentary....
There's a really good one about Jeff Buckley... from Holland... called Goodbye and Hello.
You people know how I feel about pets.
You know how I think that they are more trouble than they are worth.
I'm glad that Kenna can wipe her own behind so I don't have to baby her... and yet.
I gave in.
I caved.
Kenna wanted a guinea pig.... oh lord, ewwwwww. Since Kenna wanted a fluffy rat, Mook wanted a pet too... but keeping with her personality...she wanted a tarantula... or a rat. A real honest to goodness white rat. SHIT. Rock and a hard place, right?
So, like the jerk that I am, I gave in...and of course, I'm the only one with second thoughts about it.
Charlie. An 8 week old Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab mix puppy. Jesus Mary and Joseph. What have I done?
Now, when this animal came home, it was put out there that I was NOT going to be the one cleaning up poop and taking care of this mutt. That if he was going to be a FAMILY pet, then the family was going to have to take care of him. So, after first, things were fine... it was a group effort... everyone took him out, played with him, fed him...
The housebreaking wasn't going too badly... it all seemed like it was going to be okay.
But then..
SatanDog came out. And it started last night.
Kenna had Millie and Jack spending the night. And I suppose it was a bit much for ole Lucifer. He was really excited with the kids running around...so there was pee. Then there was vile dog mess. Now you KNOW who had to clean that up, right? Because Kenna had her friends, and frankly do you think she'd do it right? And Mook was doing her homework. Chris was at work... so, it's all on me.
Then, the dog just wouldn't go to sleep. He was being a pest all night long, he'd doze off for a bit, but then promptly wake me up to be pet or to bite my hand. At 6am this morning, he decided he was done, and had to be up and eat.
This dog is killin' me. Today.... who knows about tomorrow...
We've had him for 16 days so far...and the housebreaking is in the gutter today... hopefully tomorrow or later, he will just snap right back into it. Otherwise, I swear, the RSPCA are going to find him tied to their front door.
That was when we first had him home.....But now, I swear he's gotten bigger.
